MR Credit 5: Local/Regional Materials
LEED® INTENT
"To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation. (800 km or 500 miles of the project site)."

MR Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable Materials
LEED® INTENT
To "reduce the use and depletion of finite raw materials and long-cycle renewable materials by replacing them with rapidly renewable materials".
Requirements: "Use rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter)"
A typical Cork Tree can be harvested for up to 150 years! Every time the bark is harvested it grows back stronger than the previous harvested materials. Every piece of Cork bark harvested is used so no waste is ever generated; even small pieces of Cork are used up to produce flooring and other Cork based products.

Cork flooring is made exclusively from the carefully harvested bark of the Mediterranean Cork Oak Tree. 2. SilverStrand Bamboo
SilverStrand Bamboo floors are made entirely of bamboo which is harvested every 5-6 years and leaves behind a thriving plant. One single bamboo plant can produce over 200 shoots in its lifetime. MR Credit 7: Certified Wood
LEED® INTENT
To encourage environmentally responsible forest management.
Requirement: Use of wood-based materials and products, certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s Principles and Criteria.
Management System Certificate which certifies that the company conforms to the Chain of Custody Standard.

The core board used by Egger in the manufacturing of its laminate flooring product is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).2. Karelia
Karelia is the holder of a DNV
Management System Certificate which certifies that the company conforms to the Chain of Custody Standard.

The Finnish Forest Certification Council has granted Karelia the right to use the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes)- Promoting Sustainable Forest Management logo.* At this time, only FSC is acceptable to achieve this credit *
IEQ Credit 4: Low-Emitting Materials - Composite Wood and Laminate Adhesives
LEED® INTENT
"Reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, potentially irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well being of installers and occupants."
Requirements:
"Composite wood and agrifiber products including core materials must contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins. Adhesives used to fabricate laminated assemblies containing these products must contain no urea formaldehyde".
M1 Classification
Classification granted by the Building Information Institute regarding hardwood flooring’s substance emissions. Karelia has achieved the highest M1 classification for their hardwood flooring.

To "Minimize exposure of building occupants to potentially hazardous particulates, biological contaminants and chemical pollutants that adversely impact air and water quality"
Reduces common germs, bacteria, mold growth, and pollen spores
- Up to 87% of common bacteria eliminated in 1st hour of exposure
- Up to 85% of E.Coli eliminated in 1st hour of exposure
- Up to 17% Staphylococcus Aureas eliminated in 1st hour of exposure
Reduces unpleasant odors - Up to 88% of common odors are diffused within 1st hour of exposure
Reduces commonly occurring VOCs
- Up to 4 times greater VOCs reduction rate than leading non-PVC alternative
- Up to 26% of Formaldehyde reduced in 1st hour of exposure
Reduces Legionella pneumophilia (the germ related to "sick building syndrome")
- Reduces up to 16% of Legionella pneumophilia in 1st hour of exposure
Reduces certain other positively charged air contaminants
- Solid reduction of ethylbenzene, m.p-Xylene, Aspergillus niger, Penicllium pinophilum
